Legal Status of Sports Betting in Kansas

Kansas lawmakers competing for a legal sports betting industry have had a busy year in 2022. SB 84, the leading sports betting bill which would legalize the activity in Kansas, was recently approved by the Kansas House of Representatives. However, it was instantly sent to the Senate for approval. It is now awaiting consideration until the Senate reconvenes on April 25.

SB 84 allows Kansas’ four state casinos to collaborate with operators working to provide online gambling options in the state. The bill also includes a 10% tax rate on operators and the state regulation of both professional and collegiate sports betting in the state.

In a recent development, the House amended the bill to provide that 80% of tax revenue generated by sports betting activities in the state will be used to attract new sports teams to Kansas. This amendment occurred just days after Kansas City Chiefs President Mark Donovan challenged the possibility of the Chiefs moving from Missouri to Kansas.

While sports gambling is not legal, it is expected to become so soon. Kansas lawmakers have stated that they want to start operations before the 2022 NFL season.
