The History of the MGM Grand Detroit

In 1996, Michigan voters authorized a proposal to build three commercial gambling establishments in Detroit. Michigan lawmakers approved the Michigan Gaming Control & Revenue Act within a year, making everything from Detroit Michigan casinos legal.

On July 29, 1999, the $235 million for a while MGM Detroit Michigan casino opened its doors.

The temporary residence was located in downtown Detroit, near Joe Louis Arena, inside a restored Internal Revenue Service building. It included two gambling floors with 2,300 slot machines, video poker games, and 80 table games.

Permanent Casino and Hotel

In 2005, the Michigan Gaming Control Board approved MGM’s plan to construct an $800 million, 100,000-square-foot permanent MGM Detroit casino, a 400-room hotel, and an eight-story self-parking garage at the John C. Lodge Freeway and Bagley Street.

In 2005, the owners, formerly known as MGM Mirage, were nearly forced to sell the resort.

MGM Mirage purchased Mandalay Resort Group, the owner of Detroit’s MotorCity Casino. Because it is illegal in Michigan to own a plurality of commercial casinos, MGM Mirage was obliged to sell one. It sold its stake in MotorCity Casino to Little Caesars Pizza magnate Marian Ilitch for $525 million.

On October 2, 2007, what is still known as the MGM Grand Detroit debuted, becoming the first and last Detroit hotel and casino rebuilt from the bottom up as a new venue.

MGM Grand Detroit President & COO George Boyer claimed at the time that it heralded a new era for Detroit, with luxuries and comforts the city had never experienced before.

It is still Detroit’s highest-grossing casino property, with a revenue of $623.5 million in 2019. That’s 43% of Detroit casinos’ $1.454 billion in revenue in 2019.

MGM did sell the initial temporary MGM Grand Detroit casino in 2010. The city purchased it for $6.32 million and restored it to become the Detroit Public Safety Headquarters.
